Gouffran's injury swung the game back in Spurs' favour

When Newcastle United sold Demba Ba in January, many supporters were worried as to the direction the club would take as a result. However, manager Alan Pardew invested admirably, securing the signings of Mathieu Debuchy, Moussa Sissoko, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Yoan Gouffran.

All four have taken to their surroundings superbly since their arrival, with three of the quartet starting in the recent defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. However, it was Gouffran's departure that saw the Magpies suffer as a result.

The Frenchman was in superb form for the visitors at White Hart Lane, limiting the impact of right-back Kyle Walker both offensively and defensively. It was no surprise to see the Spurs man endure a poor performance before his 58th minute substitution for Sylvain Marveaux as a result of a shin injury.

After being stretchered off, Newcastle's attacking influence was stifled, while Walker's improved considerably as a result with Marveaux poor after taking to the field. Netting in the first half saw the Magpies dominate following a strong Spurs start following his 24th minute strike, but in the end; it was Spurs that capitalised on his injury.

Had Gouffran remained on the pitch for the duration of the encounter, there was a possibility that Newcastle may've gone on to secure a positive result, but it wasn't to be as a result.
