Is It Time Villas-Boas Dropped Jermain Defoe?

Tottenham's season thus far has been made up of some aesthetically-pleasing midfield displays but ultimately toothless performances up top.  Roberto Soldado came into the side after a big money move from Valencia in the summer and has struck four goals so far in the league, although three have been from the penalty spot, but it has been Jermain Defoe's recent performances that has got my back up.

Take his outing against Sunderland, for example, in Saturday's late kick off. His movement was good, I'll give him that, but for a striker who has scored over 200 career goals and nine this season (all of which were in cup competitions), his finishing was appalling and threatened to cost Spurs the game.

He had six shots at goal, two of which hit the upright from close range, and one which he dragged his shot wide of the target from a matter of yards out.

When he receives the ball, he's never looking up at what he could do. There is one thing on his mind and that's going for goal. While he often hits the target, it seems a waste when there is so much quality in and around him to give up possession of the ball.

Defoe will always score goals wherever he is, I think, but this season his finishing is costing us, and as soon as Andre Villas-Boas drops him for Soldado the better in my eyes.
