Manchester United Target Cut-Price Midfielder Deal But What Could He Offer David Moyes' Side?

Manchester United have had relative success from buying players in Portugal over the years. The standout player is naturally Cristiano Ronaldo but Sir Alex Ferguson also signed Nani and Anderson who are in the current set up. Now, with the January transfer window steadily approaches, Manchester United have been linked with a cut-price move for Porto midfielder Lucho Gonzalez. But what could he offer should David Moyes snap him up?

Although United have rules regarding the signing of players over 30, Gonzalez, who is 32 at the time of writing, could prove to be an exception and act as a short-term measure.

This season the midfielder has played just three games in the Portuguese topflight but he's shone in the Champions League with the club, playing in all six of their European ties and scoring twice. He has also whipped up seven key balls and won 100% of his take ons, though due to sluggish team performances they dropped out of the competition after three losses and two draws in their last five outings.

Gonzalez completed 81% of his overall passes during the game and had 12 shots on goal, half of which hit the target, and he also chipped in with 11 defensive actions.

The way I see it, Lucho could fill a gap for the close future but he wouldn't be a long term solution to their midfield 'problem'.
