Transfer Target - Victor Wanyama (Video)

There has been increasing speculation in recent weeks that Celtic’s Victor Wanyama could be set for a January move to the Premier League.

Sir Alex Ferguson was at Parkhead on Tuesday night to watch the Kenyan cap a fine individual performance with a goal in The Hoops 4-0 win over Dundee United. Arsenal are said to have joined Manchester United in registering an interest in Wanyama, who became the first Kenyan player to score in Champions League when he netted in Celtic’s historic 2-1 win over Barcelona at Celtic Park in November.

Hailing from Nairobi, Wanyama spent his youth career with several Kenyan youth teams plus a brief spell with Helsingborg.  Wanyama signed his first professional contract in 2008 at the age of 17, a four year deal with Belgian side Beerschot AC.  The southern Antwerp side were able to fend off approaches firstly from Celtic and the CSKA Moscow for the player, but after 50 appearances and 2 goals Celtic eventually got their man in July 2011 in a £900,000 deal.

Following his debut in a 1-0 defeat to St Johnstone, Wanyama has gone on to make over 50 appearances for the Hoops, improving his goal scoring record since his time in Belgium, scoring 11 goals.  His playing style has made him a fans favourite during his time at Parkhead.  Wanyama is a robust defensive midfield player who is as comfortable on the ball as he is strong in the tackle.  It is no surprise that Sir Alex Ferguson is looking at this type of player, his midfield is crying out for one.

Back in October, Wanyama rejected an improved contract from Celtic, explaining that he did not believe his wage demands could be met by the club in the wake of reported interest from clubs in England.  It would appear that the player is certainly starting to get itchy feet in at Parkhead, could a move to the Premier League be close?
