Yoann Gourcuff: The man to keep Ramsey on the bench (Video)

There was a quip in the past concerning Arsenal and their high level of French players in their squad. While Newcastle United may've taken over the mantle from the Gunners, it hasn't stopped the north London side from being linked with a move for players currently based in Ligue Un.

One of those is Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff. The France international previously showed glimpses of his quality as a youngster with Rennes, leading to suggestions he could be the natural successor to former footballing hero Zinedine Zidane.

However, his career path hasn't been treaded as many had hoped. Gourcuff struggled for form and playing time with AC Milan, who snapped him up from Rennes in 2006, and current club Lyon. The midfielder showcased his talents during his time with Bordeaux, picking up the 2009 goal of the season award in Ligue Un with a spectacular strike against PSG.

It hasn't stopped the Gunners from approaching Lyon with a move for the 26-year-old in January, with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believed to be a big fan of Gourcuff. If the Frenchman can bring out the best in his compatriot at the Emirates Stadium, then it has to be said the north Londoners have themselves an impressive asset in their arsenal, excuse the pun.

On top of that, it will also need Wenger capable of fielding a natural wideman, rather that continuously fielding Aaron Ramsey on the right-wing, whose current performances read as 'become frustrated – receive a booking for lashing out – subbed off'.
