Yoan Gouffran: The man to fill the void left by Demba Ba (Video)

If Saturday's defeat to Reading was anything to go by, it showcased Newcastle United's need to not only bolster their defence, but strengthen their front-line as well. The Magpies amassed an astonishing 15 shots on goal at the weekend, yet managed to hit the net just once via a Yohan Cabaye free kick.

With Demba Ba gone, the goalscoring mantle had been expected to be be passed on to compatriot Papiss Cisse, who was on impressive form following his move from Freiburg 12 months ago. However, with the goals drying up and Newcastle shipping an extortionate amount, it doesn't bode well for manager Alan Pardew.

He has, to his credit, looked to address the defensive issues following the acquisition of Mathieu Debuchy and the soon to be completed signing of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from Lille and Montpellier, respectively.

Nevertheless, the striking talents of Ba are ones that shouldn't be overlooked. His goals this season are the sole reason why Newcastle are currently outside of the relegation zone, albeit by the skin of their teeth.

After missing out on Loic Remy to Queen's Park Rangers, the club were linked with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Saint-Etienne, but while interest has cooled in the youngster; reports now suggest the club have looked to sign Bordeaux front-man Yoan Gouffran.

The striker has been in impressive form for the Ligue Un side this season, netting 12 times and assisting a further two in 27 appearances. His ability to play out wide will also be of an advantage to Pardew as he looks to implement his 4-3-3 system once again and not be forced to play Shola Ameobi out wide.
