    Let's remember...Liverpool 3-1 Man Utd, November 2001 (Video)

With Liverpool and Manchester United set to come together on Sunday at Anfield, the clash will evoke memories for some of the meeting between the two sides on Merseyside on November 4th, 2001.

The two sides approached the game in 5th and 6th, separated by only a point although Liverpool had a game in hand on their rivals. However, their form could not be different from United’s, with the Reds coming off the back of three consecutive victories while Sir Alex Ferguson’s men had just been defeated at home by newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers.

The stage was set for a fantastic match and the feverish atmosphere at Anfield brimmed with anticipation. This was a Liverpool side that had the likes of Danny Murphy, Steven Gerrard, Dietmar Hamann and yes, believe it or not, Michael Owen and Emile Heskey at the top of their games. Manchester United on the other hand, despite having had a difficult start to their season, were looking for a record fourth consecutive Premier League title and could call on the likes of a David Beckham in the form of his career, Juan Sebastien Veron, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Within minutes of the game starting however, it was clear there was only ever going to be one winner. Liverpool were by far the better side and showed their superiority all over the pitch to take a 3-1 victory. Apart from two typically of the time predatory finishes from Owen, John Arne Riise, recently signed that summer by Gerard Houiller, blasted in what can only be described as an unstoppable rocket of a free kick that slammed off the bar and into the net.

Sometimes a great goal is made even greater by a fantastic bit of commentary and that is precisely what Martin Tyler produces in the video below as he clearly cannot hide his incredulity at Riise’s blockbuster effort.
