What signing Miyaichi could mean to Wigan

Wigan Athletic secured the loan signing of Ryo Miyaichi on Monday evening, a player dubbed “Ryodinho”. The 19-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance for parent club Arsenal, but is highly thought of at the Emirates Stadium, with the Gunners coaching staff keen for the Japan international to continue his development. Miyaichi recently spent time on loan with Bolton Wanderers, where he netted once in his 14 appearances for the Trotters as he garnered his first taste of Premier League football.

The chance of regular first-team football was something that the Japan international couldn’t afford to turn down, especially with the arrivals of both Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, regardless of the possible departure of Robin van Persie. Latics manager Roberto Martinez is prepared to give him that chance, with the Spaniard fully aware of his talents following his displays at the Reebok Stadium last season.

However, what will it mean for the future of Victor Moses? The young striker has just 12 months left to run on his current contract with Wigan and has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea. Reports suggest the West London side have lodged three bids for the former Crystal Palace star, with the Latics, thus far, holding firm in their quest to hold onto their prized asset.

Nevertheless, the Blues are set to return with a final bid for the Nigeria international, following the season long loan move of Romelu Lukaku to West Bromwich Albion. Wigan’s signing of Miyaichi is likely to increase speculation surrounding the future of Moses. Whether he is drafted in to replace Moses or play alongside him remains to be seen. However, speculation is now likely to be rife regarding the possible impending departure of Moses, especially with Chelsea possessing just one out and out striker in Fernando Torres.
