Spurs won’t be challenging for the title

It has emerged today that new Tottenham Hotspur signing Jan Vertonghen believes the club can challenge for the Premier League title next season. His words would surely have got a number of the fans interested, with his ambition one that echoes the board and the supporters, but it is little more than a pipe dream.

The North London side certainly possess the necessary quality to mount a challenge for the summit of England’s top tier, as witnessed from last season prior to the speculation linking Harry Redknapp for the England job. After that, however, Spurs’ win percentage dropped to just 20%, throughout the time he was mooted as Fabio Capello’s successor, and they ended up finishing the campaign in fourth place.

Despite ending the season without Champions League football, it hasn’t hindered their pulling power when it comes to transfers, already bringing in Vertonghen and Gylfi Sigurdsson. Yet, it won’t be enough for Spurs to win the title, not yet anyway. With the type of money Manchester City and Chelsea have at their disposal, it will be near on impossible for them to compete.

One thing that Spurs have lacked in recent seasons is the winning mentality to really drag them to the next level. Following the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as head coach, expectations have been high. In the Portuguese tactician, the North London side have a manager who has broken countless records with FC Porto and regardless of his time with Chelsea, is still highly regarded within the footballing world.

Upon his arrival, a wave of excitement swept over White Hart Lane, despite the media writing them off for a top four finish following Harry Redknapp’s sacking. Nevertheless, whilst Spurs do have a world class manager in Villas-Boas, it still isn’t enough for them to win the title. With the right investment and signings, they may challenge for part of the season, but it won’t be enough to win the Premier League.

no need to write any more blogs about spurs then is there. can we expect this to be your last....ever?

I scrolled down expecting a broadening out of the argument and there was none. Trash.

Wow! What a pointless article! No substance, just a thinly veiled attack on the club. Obviously a bitter Goon or Cheatski fan that can see our club is on the up, whilst theirs slides (Arsenal) or covers up the holes with a flukey cup win (Cheatski).

So the only reason Spurs wont be challenging for the title is that citeh and chavski have to much money, which means it's almost impossible for them to compete.

You could just as easily replace Spurs name with any of the other 17 teams (or 16 if you feel man u might win it) that have no chance of winning the league on that basis.

A better article would be how citeh and chavski have ruined the premier league with massive and unbalanced investment, which has cost other teams the opportunity to win major domestic trophies.

This seems to be the work of a jealous gooner. The article makes no real points and is based on nothing. I personally never wanted Redknapp sacked but was excited about AVB coming in. I just hope they sign a really good striker along with Adebayor. We have lacked class up front now since Berbatov left us and has cost us in the long run. Levy has to bring someone prolific in like Dalmao or Falcao or even Huntleaar. It has to be someone who knows where the goal is and if he does that I would certainly fancy our chances.

So this let's ManU and Arsenal out as well? Or is it only Spurs that can't compete with the spending at City or Chelsea? Really, I get this is the author's opinion but you might at least try to have something backing up the opinion.

Author - an argument requires a minimum of TWO parts. The first is your CONTENTION. You did this bit fine, you say that Spurs won't challenge for the league. Good stuff, you aced the contention part.

The second part - and some would say the most important - is the EVIDENCE. Evidence corroborates your contention, it garnishes it with reasoning so that others can establish why you hold the contention so that they may judge it on its merits.

You have no evidence. No reasoning.

This article therefore must simply be click-bait and in that goal, I contend that you failed.

Well, you certainly got my click. I did not however click on any adverts which is the likely point of click-bait. I am running linux so if you have any malicious code to run, you're out of luck. And I reported you to my friends at newsnow suggesting they de-list you.

See? I had a contention, then backed up that contention with evidence. THAT'S how you have an argument.

Also, I'm pretty sure I won.

What a pointless piece of work. The season has not yet commenced and a ball has yet to be kicked and you read this nonsense.
What a dick has to be a Gooner Knob.
Just crawl back into the hole you crawled out of. What tosh!!!

What a load of tosh, last year Chelski spend loads more than Spurs and where did they land up ... 6th So that blows your ideas/comment right out of the water. as for man C, like Chelski they spent big and yes they won the PL but only on the last kick of the ball ... Football is about people playing together, it's about needs, desire, skill etc. it's also about the manager getting the right blend and if AVB get's it right we have as much chance as anybody. Money can buy the title true, but not always as many teams have found out.

As Alf Ramsay once said, "I don't want eleven star players, I want a TEAM"

Shit. Couldn`t you have emailed the club rather than writing your blog? That way they could have saved the bus fare to Stevenage tonight.
I am so envious of your intellect and insight, I can but dream of one day writing with such fluency and substance.
All my hopes and dreams vanished in one blog I`m now off to Sports Direct,Com to buy a shirt. But prey tell me oh wise one which hue of blue I should choose?

Too late maestro, I`ve chosen - I went for navy with ltwo lighter blue chevrons on the back. I`m sure you`d approve - much more tasteful than let`s say....... bertie bassett gay purple hoops.

"Nevertheless, whilst Spurs do have a world class manager in Villas-Boas, it still isn’t enough for them to win the title. With the right investment and signings, they may challenge for part of the season, but it won’t be enough to win the Premier League".

I have one question and one question only: "Why?"

We cannot go by last season fourth because Ledly is retiring Modric is leaving and Defoe is wanted we have a new centre half and Midfielder and Hudds is back if he is fully fit and his ankle stands up we can mount a challenge because VAN will play better whithout Modric and alongside Hudds who will allow Van to go forward and pick him out with lazer passes and Ady if we get him will score loads with his head with Hudds delivery. This is all ifs this year if AVB does well if Levey buys and sells the right players to many changes like Chelscum have done could be a disaster on and off the field. So Mr Levey you have risked our chances by sacking Harry its up to you to make the right signings like Aby and Keep Defoe get Gomes back to his best make one young exciting forward Sturridge and who noes we can make a very good challenge this time if Ukad and the FA stamp down on false energy. Coys

before city and chelsea it was manure spending untold millions and the media sucking up to them

It has emerged that this article was not written by a journalist, nor even by a prominent blogger with a talent for purple prose. it was infact written by a troop of Barbary apes which promised much but ultimately fell short of their Shakespearean potential.

My last visit to this site I think, nothing to see here, they just create provocative titles to attract click-throughs.

    Pathetic.

As a tottenham fan I concide that you may have a point. But then again, are you telling us,that reall.Only man City and chelsea will win the league, because of their financial clout. In that case, your article applies to the rest of the premier league.ie. Your Manu' and the arse and the rest.So what we really have here is a journ, with an opion directed at tottenham. When it applies to 19 others in the Preimer league as well. One cannot but think,as has being mentioned, you are a closet gooner,or a Cheatski fan.Or just a bloody poor Journalist.

........by the way knucklehead, can you also tell me next weeks Euromillions lottery numbers so I can win a fortune? Or is your crystal ball only confined to predicting football ? garbage article whichever end you look at it from!
