Chelsea shouldn’t be going for Maicon

It has emerged today that Chelsea are looking to pursue their interest in Maicon. Inter Milan’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League has seen a number of their star players reconsider their future at the San Siro. One of those is the Brazilian right-back, who has seen his name linked with a move to the Blues, Real Madrid and Paris St. Germain.

The 30-year-old has been one of the games’ best in his position for some time, but his performances in recent months have dropped well below the usually high standard of the Inter ace. As such, moving for Maicon may not be of the best interest for the Champions League holders. Reports suggest a fee of around £18m has been mooted, which would have been a good deal three/four years ago.

But, at 30, Maicon is beginning to enter the autumn years of his career. Perhaps if that figure was halved, it could be construed as a good deal. As such, however, Inter would be laughing if they were to bring in that amount for the Brazil international. Chelsea should instead be pursuing younger targets to fill the gap on the right side of defence.

The Blues would be wise to targeting Lille star Mathieu Debuchy ahead of Maicon. The right-back is still only 26-years-old and looked impressive during France’s Euro 2012 campaign. Chelsea have been linked with his signature and would be wise to follow up their interest. That isn’t saying that Maicon is a bad player, but for a team that are longer to progress, he isn’t the player they should be targeting.

Bale will be loving this, haven't rated this guy since what Bale did to him in the 2 games, once could be classed a fluk but twice is unforgivable and means that the lad just can't stop him................never rated him after that

Why would Chelsea go for a 30 yr old when they are trying go younger? Makes no sense; I can't see it happening.

maicon is good value - still tops as an attacking rb, and he is an upgrade from bosingwa. bale can think whatever, chelsea won't be playing the high line with no cover that inter did when bale took advantage of his superior pace. quit being so daft folks, his 30 year age is a bonus, he is a perfect stop gap for either youth to come through or the next generation rb to be found. he will add 10+ goals with his shot or assists, and that is something chelsea will be lacking even more with the substracttions this offseason.
