AVB needs to spend in January

Three games, three wins and Tottenham Hotspur are currently sitting pretty in fourth place, behind Chelsea only on goal difference. The 3-0 win over Fulham on Saturday was as impressive as it was needed.

With clubs around Spurs faltering at Saturday, a win was absolutely vital and a 35-yard strike from Sandro, coupled with a Jermain Defoe double, ensured the North London took the share of the spoils with them as they left Craven Cottage.

However, fans were left with their hearts in their mouths following the respective hamstring injuries to Michael Dawson and Gareth Bale. While it’s expected that both players will be sidelined for little more than a fortnight, it’s still a worry for Spurs about the lack of strength in depth.

This was felt during the enforced absence of Mousa Dembele, who was ruled out for a month with a hip problem. His lack of action saw Spurs slip down the table and record just one Premier League win in four.

While the likes of Younes Kaboul, Scott Parker and Benoit Assou-Ekotto are edging closer back to full fitness, the squad is still short of quality, in both the midfield and up front. Head coach Andre Villas-Boas today confirmed that he wouldn’t be in the market for anymore signings in January, but he needs to take a different approach to the window when it reopens.

Spurs need another midfielder to cover for Dembele, or even see the Belgian pushed further forward, while with only two strikers available to the 35-year-old, another front-man is surely high on the agenda.
