Andreas Granqvist: William Gallas’ replacement (Video)

Tottenham Hotspur have an unfortunate habit of conceding late goals in Premiership encounters this season. The North London side have let in a total of 11 since the 71st minute this season, the highest in the league, and it’s been confirmed that if games ended after 80 minutes, Spurs would be top.

Head coach Andre Villas-Boas has accepted this needs to change and it will with time, but what the club desperately need is a defender to replace the aging William Gallas. The Frenchman may’ve been instilled as captain, but his performances have left a lot to be desired.

His display against Swansea City may’ve been his finest of the season, but it’s clear that a replacement is needed. Step forward Andreas Granqvist. The Sweden international has been a bright spot in a somewhat dreary season for Genoa, with the Italian side currently 19th in Serie A having lost 10 and conceded 29.

Nevertheless, it hasn’t thrown Spurs off the scent for the 27-year-old, with the club reported to have sent scouts to watch Granqvist during their 1-1 draw with Torino. With Gallas 35-year-old, a long term replacement will be needed sooner rather than later.

Whether Spurs make a move for the Genoa centre-back in January remains to be seen, but the powerful Swede could be the defender to plug the leaky back four, especially with business end of the campaign slowly encroaching on teams.

Gallas has enjoyed many a fine game for Spurs this season, with Southampton (away), Newcastle (away) and Man Utd (away) just being a few.
It is all SO EASY to make the Frenchman a scapegoat for poor defensive (TEAM) performances, but we must remember there are 3 other defenders alongside him that should be held equally accountable.

Anyone who has study Tottenhams matches like I have will tell you, that Gallas has been (arguably) OUR BEST DEFENDER THIS SEASON.
Has he made mistakes? Without question. But ALL of our other defenders have too. The only difference, for me, is that the others aren't 34, and haven't played for Arsenal, so they strangely seem not to attract so much unwarranted criticism.

Here, I'll give you a challenge: Over the next few games, CAREFULLY OBSERVE Williams display, instead of ball watching, reading forums and/or followng MOTD, and then write another article about him, or his performances. I think you might surprise yourself.
