Craig Gordon would be an astute Everton signing (Video)

The beauty of a free agent is that they can sign for any club at any time during the season. No stipulations involved whatsoever, which greatly bolstered my squad during my old Football Manager days. In retrospect, it comes as no surprise to see former Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon linked with a move to Everton.

Toffees boss David Moyes insinuated on Monday he is keen to bring in another shotstopper in order to bring in more competition for current number one Tim Howard. The 33-year-old is Everton’s starting ‘keeper, regardless of the form of back-up Jan Mucha.

The Slovakia international is yet to make a Premier League appearance since moving to Goodison Park back in 2010, such is the form of his American teammate. However, the increased in decent competition would give Howard the kick up the arse he so desperately needs.

Yes, he may’ve performed admirably as the season goes on, but he’s unlikely to be dropped from his position, even if he suffers a cataclysmic drop in form. The signing of Gordon would provide decent competition for Howard and give him the impotence to continue to perform for Everton.

It’s a shock that nobody has snapped up the former Hearts shotstopper as of yet, such was his capability to admirably fill the net during his time with the SPL side and former club Sunderland. Injuries may’ve played their part, that’s a given, but Gordon is still as reliable a stand in as any goalkeeper available at the moment.

Currently available for nothing, it wouldn’t eat substantially into Everton’s coffers either, which would only be an advantage to Moyes and chairman Bill Kenwright. Either way, if the Toffees can indeed bring in Gordon, it would be an astute signing, that’s for sure.
