Roberto Di Matteo was never going to last

Well, that was a shock to some it has to be said, but that can only be as a result of the timing. With Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo succumbing to a poor 3-0 defeat to Juventus on Tuesday night, leaving the Blues on the brink of an early Champions League exit, owner Roman Abramovich felt it was time to relieve the Italian of his managerial duties.

Since the win over Tottenham Hotspur last month, the Blues are yet to pick up three points in the Premiership. The loss in Turin looked to be the final straw, with Di Matteo himself taking over an hour for his post-match press-conference.

Nevertheless, while Abramovich had handed the former West Bromwich Albion boss a two year deal back in June, it was likely he was never going to see out the whole 24 months of the deal. With the Russian Oligarch being the way he is, the moment makes sense.

However, now is the time for the club to, again, rebuild. At present, Rafa Benitez is the odds on favourite to land the vacant role at Stamford Bridge, while Pep Guardiola is also in with a shout to succeed Di Matteo.

Yet, whoever is drafted in to take over at the helm will have to have enough about them in order to overcome West Brom and a Serie A side away from home, in the Premiership and Champions League respectively, if they are to avoid the sack.
