I disagree with Gallas disagreeing with Wenger

Following Arsenal’s AGM last week, in which Arsene Wenger claimed securing a Champions League place is more important than winning the FA or Capital One Cup, it was always evoke a reaction from all those associated with football.

On Tuesday, it was the time of Tottenham Hotspur captain William Gallas to speak out about his remarks. The Frenchman, who played for four years under Wenger during his stint with Arsenal, believes it is wrong of the Gunners boss to dismiss the domestic trophies so candidly.

However, I, personally, have to disagree with Gallas on his remarks towards Wenger’s comments. While fans are concerned with the glory that associates itself with the game, it is important for clubs to focus on the financial gain, due to the altering stipulations associated with the game.

Owners are now focused of profiting from football, rather than picking up lessened silverware, for example, the FA and Capital One Cup. Qualifying for the Champions League stands to create a larger financial windfall compared to picking up domestic trophies.

It’s hard to admit, but with the way the game is evolving, making money is the most important factor with the game at present. Granted, finishing second, third or fourth won’t see a team lift a trophy, unless of course they’re based in the Championship, League 1 or League 2.

Yet, it’s the financial gain that comes with the qualification for the Champions League that appeals to club owners. So while Gallas is right in saying that the glory of lifting a trophy is vital to the game, unfortunately the FA and Capital One Cup is further down the priority list with regards to measuring success throughout the season.

While trophies are nice to fill a cabinet and perhaps for morale, you can't buy even a squad player for the winnings you get from the FA Cup and the League championship. So Gallas is just off the mark. So unless we're talking EPL titles, nothing else ranks with UCL qualification. And if Arsenal wins only a league cup, then the detractors will be saying just that....'it's only a league cup'

Gallas can yap all he wants.....he was the team captain when Arsenal blew a 10 point lead in the championship....he failed miserably as captain to lead the lead to silverware, now he yapping about winning.....please!!!

Clubs want financial gain, players want to win trophies. It's sinple. It's hard to agree with Wenger that 'winning' fourth spot every year is successful as he's still losing his best players who actually want to win something they can hold!

Typical Arsenal losers..Valueing money and Champs league over winning trophies. They clearly are not good enough and have to put a different spin on it. Big club mentality..Yeah,Whatever. Gallas is right and deep down most reasonable Arsenal thinking fans know it but hate it when the truth is told from the outside.

Where does that leave a Player? Playing top flight football and not having anything to show for it? It is this kind of mentality that kept Arsenal where they are. Talking about Finance, ManU is the riichest club in the World and they hold the record of lifting the EPL for the highest number of times. So what are we talking about? It is better you Arsenal Apologists get your thinking cap on instead of agreeing with a Manager who is deluded

Winning 4th spot regularly is greater than the gooners getting a domestic cup trophy. The CL is where the business end of football is. Arsenal- won't be satisfied with winning a trophy, it is only a ruse to bring frustration on the Arsenal board. Getting 4th spot regularly is easily better than winning a cup during the last 7years. The CL brings prestige, money & a better class of player to the club- regardless of british tradition, it is the CL where big clubs want to be. Just ask Daglish who won a domestic cup, but was sacked cos no CL, even though he got Euro football. We at spurs loved the CL & would love to be in it next season. Don't sniff at it you gooners! Or Arsenic will be a goner & the premiership will lose a great footballing manager!

We can win a trophy and play CL football. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Congrats on completely missing Gallas' point. He said cups are what players remember winning. Everyone can see the financial benefits of CL football and we don't need your insight to understand why Wenger wants to finish in the top 4, but thanks anyway. All Gallas said was that he wants to win trophies because that's how players measure their careers. He didn't talk as an owner or even as a fan. I don't see why you'd disagree with him on that unless you just completely misunderstood him.

Id just like to point out that Gallas' comments are NOT in response to Wengers daft proclamation. This is a 'response' concocted by the press because of the obvious connections between the two. Get the bigger picture.

ps: wenger is very, very wrong!!!

Tell that to the travelling goons who have gone to Reading and are watching their team 3-0 down after a mere 20 minutes. Winning is everything, regardless of the competition.
