Chelsea can be the first team to defend the Champions League (Video)

While watching Chelsea take on Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, something was painstakingly evident; this Blues side are more than capable of securing glory once again. The west London side were somewhat fortuitous to have picked up the Champions League last season, but were widely praised for their efforts that saw them secure glory.

In becoming the first London team to win the Champions League, it unsurprisingly opened the door for players to arrive at Stamford Bridge. Eden Hazard, who signed from Lille OSC in the summer, admitted that Chelsea’s win in Munich in May convinced him to sign for the Blues.

With the likes of Oscar, Marko Marin and Cesar Azpilicueta all joining the Belgium international at Stamford Bridge, the flair that the European champions were lacking last season has suddenly been injected into the squad and in abundance.

The power that made them a force to be reckoned with remains, which has made Chelsea that more difficult to break down. The abundance of quality manager Roberto Di Matteo has at his disposal has seen the Blues compared to Real Madrid, with the duo possessing similar stars throughout their respective squads.

Perhaps the only facet of Chelsea’s game that lets them down is going forward, with Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain more than a match for Fernando Torres. The Spaniard has led the line superbly following the departure of Didier Drogba, regardless of the criticism he may’ve received in the past.

However, the one problem that will let the Blues down is their lack of strength in depth in the striking department. Di Matteo has just Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge to call upon should Torres succumb to injury or suspension.

With Romelu Lukaku on loan, and beginning to show the potential that saw him rise to prominence with Anderlecht, Chelsea are still lacking in depth, but the quality could well see them become the first side in history to defend the Champions League.
