It’s time for Sparky to worry

With the amount of money Queen’s Park Rangers have spent this summer, many would expect them to perform more admirably than they are currently doing so. A 2-1 defeat to London neighbours West Ham United left the R’s rooted at the foot of the table with two points from six games (sound familiar?).

With the vast amount of money that Tony Fernandes has pumped into the club, many were expected manager Mark Hughes to comfortably pull away from the relegation threat, of which he so famously staved off last season.

However, it appears as though the 5-0 opening day defeat at the hands of Swansea City has set the tone for the West London side this season and despite looking like they deserved to take all three points from White Hart Lane, QPR have failed to pick up a league win this season.

The signings of Julio Cesar, Stephane M’Bia, Park Ji-Sung, Esteban Granero and Junior Hoilett has seen some believe that QPR are too good to go down, but that simply isn’t the case. Tottenham Hotspur were in a similar predicament in 2008, with many questioning whether they deserved to find themselves 20th, regardless of the quality that ran through the squad.

This is where Hughes should be fearing for his job. The former Manchester United and Chelsea striker hasn’t made a blistering start to the campaign, but with the players at his disposal; QPR should be much higher than bottom.

What makes things worse is that Harry Redknapp, despite his role with AFC Bournemouth, will likely jump at the opportunity to return to a Premier League club. With the financial backing of Fernandes, this could well be a possibility.

Hughes is more than likely to have time to turn things around, but QPR are already playing catch-up, having dropped points against Swansea, West Ham and Norwich City. If he loses the next two games and Redknapp is brought in, fans can be expected to once again hear the famous ‘two games, eight points’ quip that he used so often during his time at Spurs.
