Brighton search low for new striker

“It is all so much better at the top”, they say in order to sell the dream, but try telling that to Dorchester Town’s Ben Dickenson who has continued his meteoric rise, faster than that of house-gas prices, by being on the edge of a move to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Dickenson was playing in the star-studded Wessex Premier League only a year ago for Christchurch F.C before his move to Dorchester; where he has gone on to score five goals in eight games in the Blue Square South Premier League.

His impending move to Brighton would mean he has moved up through eight tiers of the British League system in under a year, which I make a quicker jump to stardom than a desperate appearance on Big Brother.

Only time will tell if he can stay at the top, or near it anyway, longer than a Big Brother contestant but an array of local clubs interested in his signature, including Bournemouth who also had a bid accepted for the striker , suggests the 18 year old has enough potential to make the massive step-up.

Fears will be inevitable in Brighton fans who may expect a repeat of the coming of Chris Holroyd, who made his own step-up from Blue Square club Cambridge only to last half as long as Ricky Gervais at a convention on political correctness, making 16 appearances and scoring absolutely no goals.

Ex-Southampton trainee Dickenson is expected to head into the development squad initially as he adapts to professional ranks. Gus Poyet will be cautious about promoting him too quickly, but some elements of unreasonable Brighton support are clamouring for an immediate replacement of top-scorer at the club, Ashley Barnes. One maybe expecting a rise in sales for walking sticks at the AMEX as fans damage their knees by jerking them too quickly.

Little old Christchurch will also benefit from the proposed deal as Dorchester Chairman Shaun Hearn has pledged to use the fee to make a small donation to Christchurch’s plan to renovate their changing room facilities. Isn’t he nice?

Hearn claimed that a fee has been agreed with two unnamed football league clubs and Dickenson is expected to choose soon, with Brighton the favourites.
