Eric Abidal is the perfect full back solution for Arsenal

Eric Abidal to Arsenal is a story that has been doing the rounds in the rumour mill as of late. Arsenal has been hit by injuries to Bacary Sagna, Andre Santos and Kieran Gibbs. The likes of Francis Coquelin, Ignasi Miquel Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny have all attempted to fill the void, with differing levels of success.

But with Coquelin being the latest injury victim in the 1-0 F.A Cup victory over Leeds, Arsene Wenger may be forced into action in the transfer market. Rumours of Wayne Bridge, Taye Taiwo and even Kieran Richardson have filled the gossip columns of newspapers and websites, as players who Wenger is looking to sign. Yet the one name that stands out above the rest is Eric Abidal.

Whilst he may be reaching the twilight of his career, there is no doubt the man still has ability. After recently winning his fight against cancer, Abidal has slotted comfortably into the back four at Barca at either left back or in the centre of defence. His versatility is something Arsenal could really use due to the never ending injuries that blight our squad.

In terms of mentality, something that this current Arsenal squad seem to lack is definitely a winner. 3 French League titles, 3 Spanish league winners’ medals and 2 Champions Leagues prove that Abidal has what it takes to play in the big games for the big teams. He could also be used in a coaching role by Wenger helping the likes of Gibbs, Jenkinson and the rumoured signing of Southampton’s 16 year old full back Luke Shaw develop.

Whilst Arsene Wenger’s policy for always building for the future is well documented, it is time he concentrated on the here and now and Abidal could be the perfect remedy for the Frenchman.

    never gonna happen

How about Gareth Bale, he'd be a good signing. My point being has Abidal actually expressed any interest in joing Arsenal and have Barca shown any desire to get rid of him ? Doesn't seem like it to me.
