Wolves Fans – the most fickle fans in the premier league

Mick McCarthy has done an outstanding job at Wolves, if you look at the clubs recent history, in the last 20 years this is only the 4th season the club has spent in the premier league; 3 of which under the wing of Mick McCarthy.

Since McCarthy took charge of the club they have progressed and flourished as a team. He took charge of a team who had struggled in the hands of Glenn Hoddle and the team seemed to play without passion and desire to win. When he took over there was little expectation of to gain promotion immediately as they had a reasonably young squad, but he actually took them to the playoffs in his first season in charge. In his second season came the investment of Steve Morgan, who put £30m into the club and the ethos was changed as they set out to “re-establish Wolves as a Premiership Club.” They signed good young talent such as Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Steven Ward and Kevin Foley, who are all now decent premier league players. After Promotion in the 2008-9 campaign they started off like a train and maintained the form not leaving the automatic promotion places after getting in them in August.

Since getting to the premier league, he has made some excellent signings, Kevin Doyle, Jamie O’Hara and Roger Johnson just to name a few and has managed to keep them up against the odds 2 seasons on the bounce, and if the season ended now, they would still stay up.

He made a bold decision in the first season in premier league, resting 10 players against Man United as he felt with his best 11 they would lose regardless which paid off as they secured 3 vital points against another promoted side with a 1-0 win against Burnley. For his sins, himself and Wolves did receive a £25000 fine for breaking premier league conduct.

But still despite all this some Wolves fans think he should be sacked.

They may sit in 17th position in the Premier League which they would obviously like to improve on, but considering they have played 6 of last season’s top 10 and they are only 3 points of West Brom in 10th place, they aren’t really doing that badly. Some of the fans have suggested that he makes the wrong substitutions, but how can you fault a manager who makes 2 changes with their team 2-0 down who both score to level the scores against Swansea who have shocked everyone with their first-rate performances this season.

They also suggest that McCarthy’s tactics are too negative, but sometimes against good teams you need to dig in and defend and hope to catch them on the break. Every fan wants to watch an excellent flowing game of football, but for managers football is a results business. The Wolves fans want to see their team to show a bit more going forward but would you really want to watch your team go forward irresponsibly and end up getting stuffed 3-0 or 4-0. The answer is no. Wolves restricted Everton really well; the 1st goal came from a set piece and the second a soft penalty. They have Chelsea at the weekend, despite Chelsea’s fragile defence they are potent going forward, it would be unwise to go for an attacking minded tactic.

I’m not suggesting teams should stay with their managers just because of the work they have done in previous seasons, but if they sacked McCarthy now, who would they replace him with and with the resources available and the current squad would they even do any better? My thoughts are that it is unlikely.

Get you rfacts right if you want anybody to take you seriously. Neither of the subs McCarthy brought on against Swansea (Vokes and Milijas) scored. Doyle and O'Hara did.

Calum Steel obviously knows nothing about Wolves. If you'd have seen us play you might understand, You have to take substance over style. But we do not have that. The Swansea result we totally did not deserve and was almost complete luck! We are progressing well as a club and dont need a manager who aims for 17th and leaves it til 3 mins before the end of the season to survive!

We have a very smart owner, with money at his disposal, a top chief executive, An almost complete stadium rebuild and have 0 debts, the only club in the Premier League. We are aiming high as a club. Aiming high does not mean going to Everton and aim for a 0-0 draw. I dread to think what Chelsea could do to us the weekend.

There are managers available who are proven at the top. If we are aiming for more than relegation/17th we should look at these as potential managerial candidates.

Agree what a great job McCarthy did turning the club around but it shouldn't mask our current form.
I don't want "excellent flowing football" I want a defence that can allow the team to play. 4 years and the defence is shocking Berra? Stearman? They aren't Premier League defenders and while we continue to be linked with forwards other clubs are linked with people like Onuoha on loan which is what we need. I am incredibly grateful for everything McCarthy has done and I don't want him sacked, I want him to wake up and see that our defence has conceded 2 or more in 8 of the last 9 nine league games and we can't play Doyle, Fletcher, O'Hara and Jarvis together because we have to play Edwards help cover the shocking defence.

I wish people would stop going on about the difference the subs McCarthy made against swansea If you watch the game it is the subs swansea made in taking off their 3 best players on the day is what got wolves back to 2-2

We will not get another point untill Boxing day with this clown in charge FACT!

McCarthy and pieman Moxey OUT NOW BEFORE IT IS TO LATE

4 POINTS FROM THE LAST 10 LEAGUE GAMES, ELIMINATED IN THE LEAGUE CUP DURING THIS PERIOD.McCARTHYS TEAM TALK FOR TOMORROW DONT MIND GETTING BEAT AGAIN BUT TRY TO KEEP THE SCORE DOWN.NOT GOOD ENOUGH HE HAS DONE A DECENT JOB,BUT HE AS GONE AS FAR AS HIS TALENTS WILL ALLOW HIM

Cheap easy comment, MM has done great but do we not aspire to a little better than an obviously pending 3rd season of relegation battle? We dont expect european football cos we know that is out of our bracket. I still think MM is the man but watch that Swansea game again and you will call it luck of the Irish cos his subs made no impact at all we got 2 lucky breaks involving players already on the pitch. I know we have an impatient element, mind you we have had a lot to be impatient about - but I do not think we are any different to West Ham, Newcastle, Sunderland, Stoke, Villa, Spurs fans. Everyone loves MM in the press as he speaks well, but lets judge who were right at the end of the season in voicing 'some' disapproval. We just want small signs of progress, and there is none.

Go and "write" some original material (or better still don't bother at all) instead of regurgitating the utter drivel "written" about Wolves and their fans over recent weeks. You haven't a clue about the club or it's fans. And how ironic it is that disquiet shown by fans of certain other clubs is dressed up in a totally different light. There is only one person on this website that is fickle and it certainly isn't the wolves fans. Perhaps you should look the word up in a dictionary before trying to use it.

You ill informed cretin. I Literally do not know where to begin as there is so much drivel in here its actually embarrassing.
"....which paid off as they secured 3 vital points against another promoted side with a 1-0 win against Burnley" We won 2-0. Wrong. Have another go....
"but how can you fault a manager who makes 2 changes with their team 2-0 down who both score to level the scores against Swansea" mmm wrong again neither of the subs scored. Tit.
Another point about that double substition, that Mick is somehow getting credit for, is that the two players that he brought on (Gued & Nenad) were players the fans had been screaming for to play for the previous 3 weeks! He brings them on and we instantly look a better team. Fans point is proven. The dithering ineptitude of manager is ruthlessly exposed yet again.
Oh, and please never ever write another thing about my team again you massive gimp.

i don't know a great deal about wolves fair play, i may of got some of the facts slightly wrong i was clearly misled about the swansea game. But the point i was trying to make looking from a different angle in my opinion he's doing a reasonable job. Look at the teams you've actually played before deciding that the manager is clueless, losing at home to QPR wasn't a great result but they are a team who have been given a great deal of money to spend and spent it well the last few weeks of the transfer window. In Roger Johnson you've got in my opinion one of the best centre defenders in the league on his day, he hasn't lived up to expectation yet though.

So you write a long and detailed piece (with plenty of them incorrect) then admit 'I don't know much about Wolves''.
Brilliant! Perhaps stick to writing about things you have some knowledge of!
    Just a thought.

Fair play for yor response Callum, but if you are make such easy and sweeping statements then back it up properly.

Would you dare make such a statement about a London clubs fans when they have a go about substitutions?. I respect WHU but their fans certainly let their lot know what they think too. The best we have had in 30 years is premiership struggle. Charlton fans wanted their boss out because he couldnt get them into Europe not so far back (if I recall correctly), we just want a little progress but its looking grim.

Wolves are an easy target, midlands club, no press love in. MM is a popular bloke (rightly so) who other fans love because he talks so much sense. But ultimately Wolves fans are going to judge him on the current team, there is little room for sentiment even if we owe him a hell of a lot.

Mick McCarthy's comments post Chelsea game (ENOUGH SAID):

Irishman sees few positives but refuses to blame anyone in particular after demoralising loss, instead focusing on the support his side received from the club's fans

"There was a whole load of people who I thought were fabulous today and that’s our fans," McCarthy stated.

"They paid fifty quid to be here and watch it, and it least it gave them something to cheer.

"I can’t say we brightened their day too much but at least they saw a performance of heart and spirit in the second half."
